Read the example

Each group is labeled with its actual suit or honor. Bams are bamboo, Craks are characters and Dots are circles. F means flower, D means dragon and J means joker. Flowers and seasons are interchangeable at this table.

The picture shows one valid choice, including any required jokers. The written rule tells you which numbers and suits may change. Colors are a second cue; the labels carry the meaning.

Make a legal call

“May call” lets you take a discard that completes an exact group of three or more for your chosen line. It does not let you expose a single, a pair, or an incomplete group.

“Concealed” means no earlier exposures. Either kind of hand may take a final discard that completes the entire hand, including a single or pair. A joker discard cannot be called.

Use the printed value

Every winning hand contains exactly 14 tiles and pays the value printed on its line. Jokers can fill identical groups of three or more, but never singles or pairs. You cannot pass a joker in the Charleston.

At our table, a discard win pays the card value from each opponent, with the discarder paying double. Self-pick doubles every payment. A jokerless hand doubles again unless it is entirely singles and pairs.
